History of croquet at Kew Beach Lawn Bowling Club

“Croquet is a long-established game, widely known and practised in France since the XI century under the name of 'jeu de mail' (mallet game). Borrowed by the British around 1300, it was modified over the centuries: the Scots made golf out of it, the Irish turned it into croquet.”
(The president of the Fédération Française de Croquet, Anthoine Ravez, in his brochure for the Coupe des Alpes (France, Switzerland, Italy) of 1992)

Don Short introduced croquet to Kew Beach Lawn Bowling Club in 2010, and ever since has been recruiting passersby as curiosity brings them to the club’s fence to watch. As well as encouraging people to try the game and join the club, Don has been the master instructor in the rules of the two types of croquet games, and in the subtleties of actual play.

Joining the club permits you to play one or both sports offered: croquet and lawn bowling. All croquet equipment is provided by the club. You’ll be able to enjoy tournaments if you wish, barbecues, and social events.

Most of us are a fairly laid-back group who play for fun and social interaction.

Play Times

Join us for a game!  Sundays from 10 am -12 pm  by the cool shores of Lake Ontario.  We play both golf croquet and USCA rules croquet.

Coaching

We are always happy to provide coaching and tips for new players and you’ll find an encouraging, supportive attitude among the club members.  When setting up games, we match new players with more experienced players as much as possible
